Aesthetic Gum Lift

young lady smiling at the beach after a visit to Brush & Floss Dental Center in Stratford, CTWhen you first meet someone, what do you notice? Is it their eyes? Or perhaps their height or hair? For many of us - even those people who do not look at teeth for a living - we tend to look at smiles. A smile is really important. If you have been looking at smiles lately, you’ll know one smile is not like the others. Some smiles are amazing - while other smiles...not so much. One problem with people smiling is that they have amazing teeth, but their gums are too big for their teeth. They may make their teeth look smaller than they are. If this sounds like you, there are ways that we can reduce the size of your gums and let the beauty of your teeth shine through. Let Brush & Floss Dental Center tell you about aesthetic gum lifts.

Why Do Some People Have A Lot of Gum Tissue?

There are many reasons why people have a lot of gum tissue. Sometimes having a lot of gum tissue is hereditary, so you may have family members with the same excessive gum tissue problem you have. You could also have too much gum tissue because of inflammation of your gums. This is usually caused by gum disease, which we can help with. Once we begin treatment for your gum disease, you may notice that your gums are smaller. There are also times that medication causes gum tissue growth. Anti-seizure medication, immunosuppressive drugs and some heart medications can cause a lot of gum growth.

What is an Aesthetic Gum Lift?

In the past, people who wanted to get excessive gum tissue removed had to have it removed with a scalpel. A lot of people didn’t like this procedure, because it involved cutting and sutures. There was a risk of infection. Luckily today, we can remove excess tissue with a laser. This reduces bruising, swelling, and bleeding - which means there’s no need for sutures at all. In addition, the laser’s heat kills off the bacteria, which means the risk of infection is much lower than with a scalpel. Because we aren’t doing any cutting, there’s no need for anesthesia, because lasers are painless. With lasers, we are able to remove only the gum tissue that we need to remove. It also means we can contour your gums to fit the size of your teeth, as well as your face.

Am I A Good Candidate for an Aesthetic Gum Lift?

When you look in the mirror, do you see lots of shiny teeth, or do you see a lot of gum? If you do seem to have a lot of excessive gum tissue, a gum lift may be perfect for you. Gum lifts can really make a difference in how your smile looks. We also use gum lifts for people who have uneven gums, so that their gums appear uniform across their smiles. If you have good oral health, and you do not have gum disease, you may be a great candidate for a gum lift. When we look at your mouth, if we notice you have gum disease, we will need to treat you for the disease first. Once your gum disease is treated, you may make a great candidate for the aesthetic gum lift.
